Včera uplynulo 121 let od úmrtí jednoho z největších horrových spisovatelů všech dob Howarda Philipse Lovecrafta. Tento nevědomý prorok prastarých a neúmyslný zakladatel Mýtu Cthulhu byl a je slavnější spíše po své smrti než za života. Možná proto by mohlo být zajímavé zmínit pár slov o tom jaký jeho život byl.
Howard Philips Lovecraft se narodil v 9 hodin ráno 20. srpna 1890 v rodinném domu Lovecraftů (Angell Street 454 – Providence, Rhode Island). Lovecraft pochází ze starých koloniálních rodů, stal se britským loajalistou, ačkoliv Británii nikdy nespatřil. Jeho matkou byla Sarah Susan Philips Lovecraft a pocházela z rodu George Philipse z Massachusetts, jenž se sem přistěhoval roku 1630. Jeho otec byl Winfield Scott Lovecraft, obchodní cestující, pracující pro Gorham & Co., Silversmiths, Providence. Když malému Lovecraftovi byly tři roky, jeho otec se nervově zhroutil v jednom v pokoji v Chicagu a byl odvezen do Butlerovy nemocnice, kde setrval až do své smrti 19.6.1898. Lovecraft byl informován, že jeho otec je paralyzován a v komatu, ale nabyla to zcela pravda. Jeho otec zemřel v na neúplnou obrnu (druh neurosyfilie), když mu bylo Lovecraftovi osm. Po smrti otce vyrůstal u své neurotické matky, vychováván svými dvěma tetami a obzvláště svého dědečka, prominentního průmyslníka Whipple van Buren Phillipse.
Lovecraft byl předčasně vyvinuté dítě, ve dvou letech recitoval poezii, četl ve třech letech a v šesti již uměl psát. Jeho mladické nadšení bylo pro Arabské noci, které četl v pěti letech a ze kterých si přivlastnil pseudonym Al Zahred, který později použil jako autora mýtického Necronomiconu. O rok později, kdy jeho zájem o Arabské noci ochladl, objevil řeckou mytologii a prokousal se přes Bulfinchův Věk bájí a dětskou verzi Iliady a Odyssey. Ostatně jeho nejrannější literární dílo (Báseň o Odysseovi – The Poem of Ulysses; 1897), je parafrází Odyssey na 88 řádcích rýmů. Poté ale Lovecraft objevil weird-fiction, což bychom mohli přeložit jako tajuplné, hrůzyplné a záhadné romány. Jeho prvotina v tomto stylu byl The Noble Eavesdropper (Vznešený slídil) z roku 1896. V těchto zájmech Lovecrafta velmi podporoval jeho dědeček, jenž bavil a zaujmul svého vnuka právě těmito povídkami v gotickém stylu.
Jako dítě Lovecraft byl samotářský a také trpěl častými nemocemi a většina z nich byla zjevně psychická. To byl také důvod, proč jeho přítomnost ve Slater Avenue School byla pouze sporadická. Opomíjené znalosti ve škole Lovecraft získával četbou. V osmi letech objevil poprvé vědu, nejdříve chemii a poté astronomii. Začal vydávat pouze pomocí kopírky pro své přátele časopisy jako The Scientific Gazette (1899-1907) a The Rhode Island Journal of Astronomy (1903-07). Hdyž přišel na střední školu (Hope Street High School), zjistil, že někteří učitelé a jeho spolužáci sdílejí jeho zájmy a tak navázal se svými vrstevníky hlubší vztahy. Lovecraft poprvé publikoval v roce 1906, kdy napsal dopis na astronomické téma do The Providence Sunday Journal a poté začal psát pravidelný měsíční astronomický sloupek pro Pawtuxet Valley Gleaner. Později také psával převážně astronomické příspěvky pro venkovské časopisy jako The Providence Tribune (1906-08), The Providence Evening News (1914-18) a The Asheville (N.C.) Gazette-News (1915).
Po smrti svého dědečka (1904) se Lovecraftova rodina dostala do finančních potíží. Byl nucen se svou matkou přestěhovat z marnotratného života ve Viktoriánské vile svého děda do stísněné čtvrti do čísla 598 v ulici Angell Street. Ztráta rodného domu na něj zapůsobila natolik, že přemýšlel o sebevraždě – z těchto myšlenek jej vyvedly dlouhé zádumčivé projížďky na kole kolem Barrington River. V roce 1908, kdy měl graduovat, se Lovecraft psychicky zhroutil a díky tomu odchází ze střední školy bez diplomu. To vedlo i k neúspěchu při pokusu o vstup na Brownovu Univerzitu. Z těchto důvodů se Lovecraft stává samoukem. V letech 1908 – 1913 se zdánlivě stahuje do ústraní, aby se mohl v klidu věnovat astronomii a psaní poezie. Během této éry se rapidně zhoršil vztah k matce, která se stále nevyrovnala s nemocí a následnou smrtí svého manžela.
První veřejné proniknutí Lovecrafta jako spisovatele se událo díky jeho protestům proti fádnímu brakovému spisovateli „love story“ Fredovi Jacksonovi v časopise The Argosy. Po jeho příspěvku se strhla vášnivá obhajoba jeho obdivovatelů a Lovecraft brzy rozpoutal ohnivou diskuzi jak v časopise The Argosy, ale i podobných plátcích. Tato událost neunikla bedlivému oku Edward F. Daasovi, presidentovi United Amateur Press Association (UAPA). Ten přizval Lovecrafta k členství a ten tak učinil roku 1914. Díky tomu mohl Lovecraft poté vydat svůj první časopis pod názvem The Conservative (1915-1923). Později se on sám stal prezidentem UAPA a také krátce byl prezidentem National Amateur Press Association (NAPA). Jak sám později říká, tato léta byla pro něj vytažením z bahna a jeho život tak dostal nový směr. Poté inspirován díly W. P. Cooka a jiných napsal své dva první „lovecraftovské“ povídky The Tomb (Hrobka) a Dagon, které měly krátkodobý úspěch v létě 1917. Směr těchto dvou děl se pro něj stal osudovým, ačkoliv nadále největší důraz kladl na poezii a literární eseje. Udržoval velmi aktivní korespondenci jak se svými přáteli, tak s různými literárními asociacemi.
Lovecraftova matka po nervovém zhroucení roku 1919 byla odvezena do téhož ústavu jako její bývalý manžel, do Butlerovy nemocnice. Z e svého stavu se taktéž nevzpamatovala až do své smrti v 24. května 1921. Mladíka se ujaly plně sestry jeho matky, které se psychickým stavem od své sestry příliš nelišily. Snažily se ho připravit pro život mladého gentlemana, který se bude živit svou prací, ovšem mladý Lovecraft tuto touhu nesdílel. Smrt jeho matky byla pro něj šokem, ale vzpamatoval se z něj natolik, že již 4. června téhož roku zorganizoval setkání amatérských žurnalistů v Bostonu. Zde také potkal ženu svého života – ruskou židovku Soňu Šifirkin Haft Greenovou. Jejich setkání bylo náhlé a osudové. Roku 1924 se vzali (o svatbě nikoho neinformovali, jen jeho tety obdrželi po svatbě dopis) a Lovecraft se odstěhoval za ní do Brooklynu. Dal se na dráhu profesionálního spisovatele, přispíval do magazínu Weird Tales (tento typ časopisů se nazýval Pulp – což můžeme přeložit jako laciný plátek se „senzacemi“) a jeho žena měla na páté avenue v New Yorku obchod s klobouky. Po krátké chvíli však přišly potíže, Sonin obchod zbankrotoval a Lovecraftov zmeškal příležitost společně redigovat Weird Tales. Jeho manželka měla také podlomené zdraví a tak se léčila v ozdravovně v New Jersey. Lovecraft se pokusil si najít práci, ale nikdo nechtěl 34-letého muže bez jakýchkoliv pracovních zkušeností. Prvního ledna 1925 Soňa odešla za prací do Clevelandu a Lovecraft sám bydlel v Brooklynské čtvrti nazývané Red Hook. Ačkoliv měl Lovecraft dost přátel, poddával se depresi s osamění a izolace v cizím městě. Jeho příběhy se měnily z nostalgických do bezútěšných a nenávistných. Právě proto a patrně i z jiných důvodů se Lovecraft chce vrátit do Provence. Ve svých plánech však nenachází místo pro Soňu a tak jejich manželství končí roku 1929 rozvodem.
Jeho návrat do Provence se v žádném případě nepodobal jeho dřívějšímu životu na těchto místech, kdy přemýšlel o sebevraždě a život se mu hroutil. Můžeme říci, že následujících deset let bylo vrcholem jeho života, jako spisovatele tak i jako člověka. Putoval po starobylých místech východního pobřeží. Zde také napsal svá nejlepší díla jako The Call of Cthulhu (1926), At the Mountains of Madness (1931) a The Shadow out of Time (1934-35). Nadále udržoval živou korespondenci a i takto pomáhal začínajícím spisovatelům (August Derleth, Donald Wandrei, Robert Bloch, Fritz Leiber). Tato léta utvářela i jeho politický názor – stal se moderním socialistou. V této éře jeho rozkvětu neopomínal na samostudium v širokém záběru od filosofie přes literaturu a historii až k architektuře.
Poslední roky jeho života byly sledovány útrapami. Žil sice z malého, ale přesto příjmu, jenž mu plynul z jeho dědictví. V roce 1932 zemřela jeho milovaná teta a on přesídlil do čísla 66 v College Street ke své druhé tetě. Jeho povídky se staly delšími a komplikovanými a tak se hůře prodávaly. Proto musel přistoupit k revizím některých svých děl, stal se přepisovačem, ghost-writerem, psal poezii a „reálnou“ prózu. Smrt jeho blízkého přítele Robert E. Howarda v roce 1936 a jeho vlastní nemoc jej uvedla do trudomyslnosti a smutku. V roce 1937 byl hospitalizován v Jane Brown Memoriál Hospital, kde také o pět let později umírá na rakovinu a Brightovu nemoc 15. března 1937.
Něžný rasista
Lovecraft zpočátku obdivoval fašistické diktátory i Stalina, ač militantní antikomunista. Byl však „britským“ gentlemanem v tom dobrém slova smyslu. Poté, když zjistil pravdu o průběhu fašismu v Evropě, odvrhnul jej a stal se obhájcem Franklina Delano Roosvelta. Ovšem stále trpěl xenofóbním rasismem se smyslem pro rasovou čistotu: „… Jediné co činí život snesitelný tam, kde je hodně negrů, je princip Jima Crowa, a já bych si přál, aby jej aplikovali v New Yorku jak na negry, tak na asiatské typy odulých židů s krysí vizáží…“. Češi jsou dle něj „zvrhlá zvířata, obludy prohnilé fyzicky i duševně“ dále se vyjadřuje takto „… jsme zle postiženi opičáckými Portugalci, odpornými Jihotaliány a ukecanými Frankokanaďany“. Nicméně tyto názory „jižanského blba“ se naštěstí nepromítly do jeho literárních děl a jak se zdá ani příliš do jeho soukromého života, neboť byl obklopen tzv. rasově nečistými přáteli, jež ho milovali. Dokladem pro toto byla i jeho půvabná žena ukrajinská židovka Soňa Šifirkin Haft Greenová. Ke konci svého života se za své dřívější krvelačné názory upřímně styděl.
Lovecraftovo dílo
„…začal ukazováčky provádět sérii kabalistických pohybů, zatímco jeho hluboký hlas dutý hlas, už nepřekrývaný předstíraným chrapotem, pronášel úvodní slova strašlivé formule. „PER ADONAI ELOHIM, ADONAI JEHOVA, ADONAI SABAOTH, METRATON …“ Willet však na něj byl příliš rychlý. Zatímco psi na dvoře venku začali výt a od zátoky se náhle zvedl chladný vítr, doktor započal odříkávat slavnostními a uměřenými tóny to, co po celou dobu zamýšlel. Oko za oko – magie za magii; nechť se ukáže jak dobře se naučil svou lekci z podsvětí! Jasným hlasem začal Marinus Bicknell Willet s druhým sloupcem oné dvojité formule, která poprvé vyvolala pisatele minuskulí – záhadnou invokaci, jejiž nadpis tvořil dračí ohon, znamení sestupného uzlu – „OGTHROD AI’F GEB’LEE’H YOG-SOTHOTH ‘NGAH’NG AI’Y ZHRO!“ Při prvním slovu, které vyšlo z Wilettových úst, formule původně započatá pacientem náhle ztichla. Neschopen slova, začal netvor divoce mávat rukama, až se jeho pohyby rovněž zastavily. Když bylo vysloveno děsivé jméno YOG-SOTHOTH, nastala ohyzdná proměna. Nebylo to rozpuštění, spíše transformace nebo rekapitulace; Willet zavřel oči, aby neomdlel, než dokončí zbytek zaříkávání …“
Howard Philips Lovecraft je symbolem přechodu staré okultní prózy k moderněji podanému hororu. Samotná jeho tvorba se řadila až na konec jeho aktivit, takže po něm zbyly jen dva romány a několik desítek povídek. Sám Lovecraft si svého díla příliš necenil, sám říkal, že se: „…snaží zachytit ony nedefinovatelné pocity, že někdo uvedl v nepořádek trojrozměrný svět … jenže mi chybí schopnost sdělit čtenáři cokoliv, co by mělo cenu …“. Byl nazýván Poem 20. století. Dokázal navázat na tradici již jmenovaného Poea, Blackwooda a Machena. „Všechny mé povídky,“ říká Lovecraft „ať už spolu mají, nebo nemají souvislost, jsou založeny na základním mýtu, podle něhož byl tento svět kdysi obydlen jinou rasou, která při experimentech s černou magií přišla o svůj domov a byla odtud vyhoštěna, ale žije dál kdesi venku, vždy připravena převzít Zemi zpět do svého vlastnictví.“ Vytvořil svým způsobem psaní nový styl „kosmický horor“ a zaplnil tak prázdné místo mezi žánrem hororu a sci-fi. Ačkoliv se velmi hluboce zajímal o okultní vědy, nedokázal fakta v nich obsažená vnitřně přijmout a jeho pohled na svět byl veskrze racionální.
Z vnitřního protestu proti principům okultismu, čím se proslavil nejvíce – vytvořil „mýtus Cthulhu“. Vytvořil unikátní systém bohů, démonů, mimozemských bytostí a jiných dalších tvorů, jenž usilují o nadvládu nad Zemí. Tyto bytosti se projevuji velmi nepřátelsky ke všemu co souvisí s současným obyvatelstvem Země – lidmi.
„Domy na sever od řeky a mezi vodní a Hlavní ulicí sou jich plný – těch ďáblů a toho, co přinášej – a až budou připravený … počkej až budou připravený! … už si někdy slyšel o shoggoth? Hej posloucháš mně? Říkám ti, že vím, co ti tvorové sou. Jedný noci jsem viděl, když …EH-AHHHH-AH! E’YAAHHHH…“
Strašná prudkost a nelidský strach v zaječení starého muže způsobily, že jsem téměř omdlel. Jeho oči, které se dívaly skrze mne směrem k smradlavému moři, mu téměř vylezly z důlků, a jeho tvář byla podobna masce strachu z řecké tragédie. Jeho kostnatá pazoura se mi krutě zatínala do ramene. Ani se nepohnul, když jsem otočil hlavu, abych se podíval na to, co zahlédl.“
Tento mýtus plně koresponduje s fikcí nad jiné vynikající – Necronomiconem. Sám Lovecraft patrně získal informace o prastarém grimoáru s názvem Necronomicon. Původně šlo o staré babylónsko-arabské evokační rituály a Lovecraft z původního grimoáru učinil arcidílo černé magie. Jakkoliv se může zdát jeho dílo reálné, není tomu tak . I dnes najdeme spoustu jeho nadšených obdivovatelů (mimo jiné i režiséři filmu Záhada Blair Witch), jenž by dali ruku do ohně za autenticitu Lovecraftova Necronomiconu, my nyní víme jeho produkt je čirá fikce.
Pokud byl Lovecraft něčeho mistrem, tak toho, jak popsat hrůzostrašné prostředí svých povídek – evokaci krajiny – a jak navodit čtenáři tzv. krystalickou hrůzu. Snažil se navodit stav tzv. conditio sine qua non: „pocit zvláštního a maligního přechodného zrušení nebo potření oněch neměnných přírodních zákonů, jež jsou naší jedinou ochranou před ataky chaosu a démonů nesmírného kosmu“. V jeho povídkách je téměř absolutní absence ženského elementu, mnozí proto usuzovali na Lovecraftovu homosexualitu, ovšem to nebylo pravdou, Lovecraft byl pouze nesmělý. Což vycházelo z přesvědčení jeho matky, že má velmi ošklivého syna – syn ji uvěřil a proto dosti omezoval jakékoliv styky s opačným pohlavím. Dalším faktem, jenž údajně v jeho díle chybí, je humor. Ovšem není tomu tak. Ve svém díle si vyrovnává účty pomocí vtípků se svými přáteli. Například jeho přítel Clark Ashton se stal Klarkash – Tonem, atlantským veleknězem. Dalším vtipným úsekem bylo použití notoricky známých vět z jiných děl v jiném kontextu. V ve své povídce Šepot ve tmě takto parafrázoval Psa Baskervillského: „They were the hellish tracks of the living fungi from Yugoth“ (Byly to pekelné stopy živoucích hub z Yugothu!) – „The were the footprints of a gigantic hound!“ (Byly to stopy obrovitého psa!). Takovýchto narážek bychom našli velmi mnoho. A patrně nejpovedenějším vtipem, jenž přesáhl svůj rámec, byl výmysl mýtu Cthulhu a Necronomiconu. Byl to člověk nesmírně sečtělý, četl jak díly takových autorů jako byl Nietzsche a Spengler, ale i Sinclair Lewis, lord Dunsany, Ambrose Bierce, Robert W. Chambers nebo Arthur Machen. Obzvláště ti poslední dva pro něj byli patrně velkou inspirací.
